1) Click 'Configure...'. (The '<modem> Properties' dialog box appears, where <modem> is the name of the selected modem.)
2) Click the 'General' tab, and in the 'Speaker Volume' group, adjust the slider to the appropriate position.
3) In the 'Maximum speed' group, select the maximum connection speed.
4) (Optional) Select the 'Only connect at this speed' check box to avoid connecting to the remote network or Internet service provider at lower speeds.
5) Click the 'Connection' tab.
6) To set the connect preferences, do one or more of the following in the 'Call preferences' group:
a) Clear the 'Wait for dial tone before dialing' check box.
b) Clear the 'Cancel the call if not connected within' check box and type the number of seconds before the call will be disconnected.
c) Select the 'Disconnect a call if idle for more than' check box and type the number of minutes Windows 98/Me should wait before a connection is dropped.
7) Click the 'Options' tab.
8) If your Internet service provider requires a terminal window to connect, do one of the following in the 'Connection control' group:
a) Select the 'Bring up terminal window before dialing' check box.
b) Select the 'Bring up terminal window after dialing' check box.
9) To manually dial the connection number, select the 'Operator assisted or manual dial' check box.
10) To hide the modem connect status, clear the 'Display modem status'.
11) Click 'OK'.
